Having a technological edge can help you succeed in constructing Wonders, along with internal trade routes from Cities with Workshops sending Production to the Wonder-producing City. Wonders become increasingly more challenging to build as you raise the difficulty of Civilization 5 due to the AI bonuses. If you are competing to produce a Wonder and lose, you will get gold proportionate to the production your City invested. World Wonders may only be built once in each game.
